Home of the Centurions!

Historically, centurions were commanders of a century–a military unit consisting of 80-100 soldiers– in the Roman army. Centurions were often appointed to their roles based on their size, ability to wield a sword, and personal discipline in keeping their shields and armor polished and presentable.

The mascot logo is comprised of imagery specific to the centurion. This includes the pavise, a square shield large enough to cover a soldier’s entire body during battle, the symbol of eagle wings carrying lightning bolts, based on the Roman god Jupiter’s lightning bolts that would ultimately become synonymous with the Roman legion, and hastas or Roman spears.
